PRL-8-53 is a popular synthetic nootropic agent. It is a novel monoamine that is identified as 3-(2-benzylmethylamino ethyl) benzoic acid methyl ester hydrochloride. It is a derivative of benzoic acid comprised of the phenethylamine skeleton. Its unique structural properties meet the criteria required for cholinergic receptors interaction. Experimental animal studies have shown that PRL-8-53 produces cholinergic responses.

PRL-8-53 is considered as a nootropic agent that remains to be a research compound to date. It was developed and patented by Dr. Nikolaus Hansl during the 1970s while he was working at Creighton University. The acronym PRL came from its previous patent holder Pacific Research Labs.
