The main function of insulating materials is to provide protection for conductor insulation. According to the heating conditions of conductors, service life and special requirements, non-insulating materials and temperature levels are selected.
However, OMG EV charging cable, as an independent research and development cable manufacturer that entered the new energy field since 2006, chose XLPE as the insulation and sheath. It is characterized by low toxicity, moisture resistance, good UV resistance, processability, good, good colorability, halogen-free, smoke release, low, flame retardant properties. XLPE is the abbreviation of the English name of cross-linked polyethylene. Polyethylene is a linear molecular structure that is easily deformed at high temperatures. The process of cross-linking polyethylene turns it into a network structure. This structure is also highly resistant to deformation even at high temperatures. XLPE cable compound is a polyethylene containing organic peroxides such as DCP (dicumyl peroxide). This peroxide chemically reacts with polyethylene under high temperature, high pressure and inert gas environment to turn thermoplastic polyethylene into thermosetting (elastomer) polyethylene, namely XLPE.
Excellent anti-aging properties and super heat-resistant deformation determine that the XLPE cable can allow large current to pass under normal operating temperature (90℃), short-term fault (130℃) and short circuit (250℃).
XLPE insulated cables significantly improve the performance of PVC insulated cables. The long-term working temperature of PVC insulated cables is only 70 °C, while the long-term allowable working temperature of XLPE insulated cables can reach 90 °C. At a temperature of 130 °C to maintain the elastic state, its interception capacity can be increased by about 25% compared to the PVC insulated cable of the same cross-section. Therefore, in practical applications, XLPE insulated cables with a lower cross-section can be used to replace PVC insulated cables.
