Description

The MP5023 is a hot-plug protection chip designed to protect the output circuitry from input transients. MP5023 also protects the input from output shorts and transients.

The inrush current is limited by setting the output voltage ramp rate during startup. The output voltage ramp rate is controlled by an external capacitor on the SS pin.

The maximum output load current is limited by an on-chip current sampling technique. The current limit value size is set by the low power resistor between ISET and ground.

The gate of the power device is driven by the internal charge pump, which controls the conduction of the power FET with very low on-resistance (1.1mΩ).

The MP5023 also includes an IMON function that generates a voltage proportional to the power device current by setting the value of the resistance between IMON and ground.

The MP5023 can read current, voltage and temperature data as well as input power from the internal ADC via the PMBusTM interface.

The MP5023 includes a fast discharge path to quickly discharge the external output capacitor when the chip is disabled via the PMBusTM interface.

A full range of protection features include current limit protection, over-temperature shutdown protection, and damaged MOSFET detection. The MP5023 also features over-voltage protection (OVP) and under-voltage lockout protection (UVP).

The MP5023 is available in a small footprint FCQFN-24 (4mmx5mm) package.
